Diwa Supplemental Educational Magazines
Stay Relevant in the Age of Social Media

by Mylene Oliva

Magazines are useful supplementary tools to extend learning outside of the four walls of the classroom. Diwa’s Supplemental Educational Magazines or SEMs, available in both print and digital, are learning tools that are as informative as textbooks, but are more appealing and less intimidating to students because of their format.

Encourages reflection. SEMs provide up-to-date and reliable information. Bato Balani, the high school science and technology magazine, for example, contains sections that do more than just inform learners. They foster engagement and reflection, like Life Point, which provides practical applications for daily living, and Everyday Science, which features tricks and wonders of science.

Sets appropriate parameters. By using age-appropriate lessons in SEMs, you can help students determine the right one for them, and enhance their learning experience in a synchronous and asynchronous environment.

Provides a unique teaching strategy. A SEM’s cover illustration alone is already enough to start a discussion by allowing students to brainstorm ideas about the magazine’s content; while the headline can help them understand why the particular issue or topic is relevant at present. The important thing here is to expose students to learning materials that were written by professionals so they can have a benchmark on how they can express their thoughts.

As a supplementary resource, Diwa SEMs remain relevant teaching and learning tools. They are available in all the core subject areas, in both grade school and junior high school. Learn more about Diwa SEMs by visiting www.diwa.ph.
